Italy’s biodiversity is at risk and there needs to be some kind of initiative to help reduce the severity. As of right now, the major issues that Italy seems to be facing are habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation. As for freshwater species, they seem to be facing issues due to climate change, pollution and newly species. The image below represents the Major threats at the European level to species occurring in Italy.
Many animals in Italy are being affected by the changes going around their environment. Did you know that Italy holds about 47% of all the mammals in Europe? As the abuse environment seems to worsen, 10% of those mammals are considered threatened. The reasons as to why these mammals are becoming threatened are because of the pollution of agriculture and forests. When people go into these species environments, they are harming the homes of these mammals causing an effect in their population. Not only are mammals being affected, but reptiles are as well. Out of the 31% of reptiles in Europe, 5% in Italy are considered threatened. As for Amphibians, 22% are considered threatened out of the 49% in Europe. Many of Italy’s species are affected in a way but not as severely as other countries.
Two major components that are a major concern in Italy are, Industrial and urban pollution. With this being a main concern, up to 10% Italy’s forests have been damaged by air pollution. Air pollution has been an issue for the past couple of decades in Italy and is continuing to worsen. One of the reasons for the issue dealing with air pollution is the emission coming from factories. The only solution for air pollution in Italy to be reduced is conserving and making small adjustments to help out this issue. Not only is air pollution worsening, but water pollution is becoming an issue as well. It has never been a major issue in Italy, but as time goes on this issue might lead to some major issues. The coast of Italy has been contaminated with acid rain and garbage. As I said before, the only solution Italy has to offer is becoming a more Eco-friendly country and conserving.
Italy is a major tourist spot, creating a lot commotion going on in areas that might end up becoming abused. Italy is a very over populated country and has to deal with a variety of events and activities going on everyday. Popular areas require a large usage of electricity, gas, and other resources that Italy produces. These resources are a major part of the country and Italy has become reliant on them. Without the production of these resources, Italy as a country would not be as successful as it is now.
Overall, there are many issues of Biodiversity that take place in Italy that not to be handled before it worsens. Although Italy faces issues of biodiversity, the issues are not as severe as many other countries. If Italy took a stand at putting an end to these issues, they could most likely get everything under control. Italy will continue to face these issue just at a slower pace.
